Lenten Devotional begins Feb. 17
Beginning Ash Wednesday, the Music & Arts Committee is offering a Lenten Devotional for the daily reading of the
Gospel of Luke. The devotional was prepared in part by Dr. Suzanne Watts Henderson, Professor of Religion and Dean of the Chapel at Queens University of Charlotte and an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Why Luke? As Dr. Henderson states, “As a congregation, we’re actively exploring the role of the Christian faith in the public square. In its depiction of Jesus’ life and death, Luke’s Gospel emphasizes the very public, even political, nature of Jesus’ mission, which challenges the prevailing social order built on strength, status, and self-promotion. Luke’s Jesus showcases the values that undergird God’s kingdom – values like solidarity with the weak, self-sacrifice, and an economy of enough.”
For the 40 days of Lent, you will receive an email each day with a link taking you to the devotional. There you will find an Opening Prayer, a Reflection Question and a Closing Prayer. On Ash Wednesday and each Sunday of Lent, a piece of art will be featured in addition to a coloring page and video for the children that relates to the texts of the week.
Lenten Pen Pals
The Ministry of Engagement invites you to consider another powerful way to connect with fellow Centralites this season, using the Lenten devotional as a tool! Join Central PenPals and be matched with one or two other Centralites to process and reflect on the devotional readings as well as connect with one another throughout the season of Lent. Once matched, you and your partner(s) can decide the frequency, flow and channels and how to meet. Email, Zoom meet-ups and old-fashioned letter writing are all welcome!
