If We Were Silent
The Rev. Anna George Traynham • March 20, 2016 • Luke 19:28-40
The bible has a lot to say about stones. Through Moses, God draws water from a stone.
John the Baptist says God can turn stones into children of Abraham. Biblical characters throw stones and have stones thrown at them, and here, in the Palm Sunday story, Jesus says that even stones can declare the praise of God.
“If these were silent,” Jesus says, “the stones would shout out.” It’s a little phrase at the end of a big story, one that might go unnoticed if we read too quickly.
An Opportune Time
The Rev. Gary Charles | February 14, 2016 | Luke 4:1-13
There is something immensely satisfying in checking off items from a list. The way Luke tells the temptation story of Jesus messes with that ordered satisfaction. At the end of the story, it seems only right that Jesus could have looked down at his list to the item “Tested and tempted” and said: “Done that. Check. Next?” For Luke, though, “tested and tempted” is not coming off Jesus’ list and it is not coming off ours. Evil will not be dismissed so easily. It will be back. Count on it. In fact, it will be back, says Luke, at “an opportune time.”
A Sermon Yet To Be Finished
The Rev. Gary Charles | January 31, 2016 | Luke 4:21-30
After a long, difficult, not-so-silent retreat in the wilderness with the devil constantly carping in his ear, Jesus returns to Galilee. Upon his return, Luke says, “He [Jesus] began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.”
