Theology on Tap
Third Thursdays of the Month beginning Sept. 22
Join Susan, Sam, and Jasiel on Thursday, September 22 at Marley House Decatur for a time of fellowship and theological reflection. Social time begins at 7 p.m., followed by a small group discussion at 7:30 p.m. We will meet on the third Thursday of September, October, November and December. The series will focus on reflections from previous sermons preached at Central and we will be centering our conversation around the question: “How do we live out our faith as Central?” We hope you will join us as we nourish our faith and the bonds of friendship with one another. Appetizers and your first drink are on us!
This Saturday, Steve Fey resumes his weekly Zoom class, “Hymn Fun with Steve Fey.” Begun in March of 2020, in each session he looks at the backstory of one of the hymns that will be sung in next day’s service. To date he has led a discussion on more than 70 different hymns/congregational songs! General hymn surveys often focus on the giants of congregational songs, but this review often looks at the story behind the creation of “one-hit wonders;” this week is a case in point. The author of the text of “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less,” wrote possibly 100 hymns in his lifetime, but this is the only song still in the repertoire, although it has appeared in more than 1,000 different hymnals. The sessions begin at 10 a.m. each Saturday and run 45 minutes to an hour.
